Marbella is een mondaine kustplaats en populair vanwege zijn ligging en zijn rijke historie. Marbella ligt aan de bergrug van de Sierra Blanca, in deze bergen zijn bij opgravingen resten gevonden van Fenicische, Carthaginensische en Romeinse nederzettingen. Ook hebben de Moren de stad nog lange tijd in handen gehad, dit is een van de grootste redenen dat Marbella een flinke mengelmoes van culturen is geworden. Het oude centrum herbergt veel bezienswaardigheden, allemaal afkomstig uit verschillende stukken geschiedenis.
Marbella heeft een uiterst luxe jachthaven, Puerto Banús, waar men het gehele jaar door de meest dure jachten kan bewonderen. Met havengelden die kunnen oplopen tot 500.000 euro per vierkante meter en huurprijzen van meer dan 4.000 euro per dag voor de grotere jachten is dit één van de duurste jachthavens in heel Europa. Met name rijke Arabieren leggen hier hun jacht in de haven. Tevens zijn er in en rondom de haven veel leuke eetgelegenheden, boetieks en bars te vinden. Dure winkels met bekende exclusieve kledingmerken als Gucci, Versace en Chanel mogen uiteraard niet ontbreken in deze mondaine badplaats. Het nachtleven van Puerto Banús met zijn vele discotheken en clubs staat bekend als een van de meest populaire uitgaanscentra en ‘place to be’ aan de Costa del Sol.
Het historische centrum van Marbella is omgeven door smalle straatjes met kleine steentjes en gaan over in gezellige pleinen, een van deze pleinen is het prachtige Plaza de Naranjos, het centrale punt van de binnenstad. Op het plein zijn diverse restaurants, waar je in de schaduw van de sinaasappelbomen kunt lunchen of dineren. Op het plein staan 2 belangrijke gebouwen, het 16e -eeuwse stadhuis, Casa del Corregidor en de Kapel van Apostel Sint Jacobus, de oudste christelijke parochie kerk. Midden in het centrum staat de 400 jaar oude Iglesia de Nuestra Senora de la Encarnacion, een vrij toegankelijke katholieke kerk, de kerk is prachtig van binnen en zeker een bezoek waard.
