The NIE number (Número de Identificación de Extranjeros) is a personal identification number that foreign nationals require to carry out financial transactions in Spain, including the purchase of a property. You will also need an NIE number to open a Spanish bank account or obtain a Spanish mobile phone number. Nowadays, you may also be asked to provide your NIE number when making larger purchases, such as a television, refrigerator or other household appliances. It is therefore an essential document, issued only once by the Spanish authorities.
An NIE number can be applied for in person at most police stations in the larger towns and cities within the provinces of Málaga and Marbella. In addition to the application form, you will need your passport and two passport photographs to submit your application. If you are planning to seriously search for a (holiday) property in Spain, it is advisable to apply for your NIE number while you are in Spain viewing potential properties. Should you then find a property that meets your requirements, you will be able to proceed quickly and efficiently without losing valuable time applying for your NIE number. Naturally, we are happy to assist you with the application locally or arrange it on your behalf by means of a power of attorney.
