NIE stands for Número de Identificación de Extranjeros. It is a personal identification number you need as a foreigner to carry out financial transactions in Spain such as buying a house, among others. But you also need the NIE number to open a bank account or apply for a Spanish mobile number. Nowadays, you will also be asked for the NIE number if you make bigger expenses like buying a television, fridge or other household appliances. So it is a very important and indispensable document which is issued once by the Spanish government.
Applying for an NIE number can be done in person at most police stations within the larger cities of the province of Malaga or Marbella. Besides the application form, you will need a passport and 2 passport-sized photos to submit the application. If you intend to seriously look for a (holiday) home in Spain, it is advisable to apply for the NIE number already at the time you are in Spain for orientation of a suitable home.
