Nerja
Located on the Mediterranean coast, over 50 kilometres east of Málaga, Nerja is famous for the Balcón de Europa, a promenade in the centre atop a cliff jutting out into the sea. Here you have stunning views of the sea and surrounding mountains. Also, Nerja is the easternmost city on the Costa del Sol with as many as 300 days of sunshine a year!
You will also find the stalactite caves (Cueva de Nerja), a series of limestone caves where many archaeological discoveries have been made and where wall paintings more than 20 thousand years old have been found. The caves were discovered in 1959 and are considered one of the most important archaeological sites in the country. A small part of the caves are open to the public; the Sala de la Torca is known for its great acoustics and is even used for musical events.
Frigiliana
One of the white villages Andalusia is famous for, about 7 kilometres inland from Nerja.
The old Moorish town centre of Frigiliana, also known as the Barribarto, is considered one of the best preserved historic villages in the province of Málaga. The village is officially a national heritage site. The old part of the village has been beautifully renovated, you have to climb for a while (300 metres above sea level), but then you will be rewarded with stunning views. Walking through this old part, it seems as if time has stood still. You imagine yourself in Morocco, with uphill, narrow cobbled streets, whitewashed houses with red roofs and wrought-iron balconies with flower boxes. El Fuerte, the hill above the village can be climbed, you reach its top via an impressive 7-kilometre hiking trail. At the highest point (almost 1,000 metres above sea level), you will enjoy stunning views over the entire coastal area of Málaga.
Frigiliana is in the middle of the Sierras de Almijara, Tejeda and Alhama Natural Park.
Torrox
Torrox municipality consists of 2 towns, Torrox Pueblo inland and Torrox Costa which is located on the coast. Torrox Costa is the tourist area with its beaches and many restaurants. The Torrox Costa lighthouse is the main attraction in the town and was built in 1864. It is the only public lighthouse in the province of Málaga. Inside the lighthouse is the Museo Marino de Torrox (Maritime Museum of Torrox).
Colmenar
Colmenar is a village with whitewashed picturesque houses, bordering the Montes de Málaga Natural Park, some 32 kilometres inland from Málaga. Colmenar has many centuries-old monasteries, churches and taverns. The village is located in protected nature reserve with impressive rivers, waterfalls, rugged landscape and fascinating vistas. The (snow-capped) peaks of the Sierra Nevada can be clearly seen from here.
Colmenar is best known for artisanal (handmade and artisanal) products such as woven baskets, carpets and mats made of natural fibres. But also through the production of homemade honey, olive oil or freshly ground flour. All the unique and traditional products are readily available in the artisan shops that dot the village. Besides olive groves, you will also find many vineyards here, mainly sweet wine is produced in this region. The beautiful rock formation of El Torcal with its ancient limestone is nearby.
Rincón de la Victoria
Rincón de la Victoria is located about 20 kilometres east of the city of Málaga and is known for its beautiful beaches with clear water and soft sand. Playa de Rincón de la Victoria is the best known, another popular beach is Playa Cala de Moral, which is located in a bay making for excellent swimming. The town is also known for its many fiestas, the most famous of which is Feria de Victoria in August. During the festival, there are concerts, flamenco performances, attractions and plenty of opportunities to eat and drink. The city is also known for its rich past, dating back even to prehistoric times. It is also home to a cave; the Cueva del Tesoro, whose walls are covered with ancient paintings and drawings.
